Barnsley First Independent Group is a community rooted, independent group focused entirely on Barnsley.

We exist to take national party politics out of local decision making and put residents back at the heart of how our borough is run. Our candidates are independent, accountable and free from party control, allowing them to listen, question and act solely in the best interests of local people.

We are ordinary residents who care deeply about our town, its villages and the people who live here. We work together across different views and backgrounds, united by a simple belief: Barnsley deserves honest leadership, clear decisions and respect for its communities.

Barnsley First Independent Group is a growing community led movement putting people before politics. We are looking for local residents across every ward in Barnsley who want to help make a real difference.

Whether you want to help with leafleting, support local campaigns, or stand as an Independent candidate in the May 2026 local elections, there is a role for you.

You do not need political experience.
You do not need party membership.
You simply need to care about Barnsley and your community.

We are recruiting volunteers and potential Independent candidates in all Barnsley wards, including Penistone, Monk Bretton, Wombwell, Hoyland, Darton, Goldthorpe, Royston, Dodworth, Stairfoot, Central and every area across the borough.
